Dim Sum Brunch At The Cathay Restaurant 国泰

leave a comment »

With the constant transformation of Orchard Road, one will probably be caught off-guard if told that there is a restaurant within that vicinity which had its root dated back in 1940.

The Cathay Restaurant was once the place to go to for its European cuisines. However, after failing to carve a niche for itself, the restaurant decided to re-brand itself and re-opened in 1951 to serve up authentic Cantonese and Shanghainese cuisines. Though that did pay off, it did not last long enough and the restaurant still had to shut its doors in 1964.

Back with a vengeance, The Cathay Restaurant has since re-opened in 2009 and is currently located at the second level of The Cathay. Will the third time’s a charm for The Cathay Restaurant?

Where To Go When Demspsey Hill Gets Too Overcrowded

As part of my assignment for Artzone, a quarterly news magazine recently launched by the University Cultural Center (UCC), I get to discover this lovely diner nestled in the quaint, tranquil neighborhood of Portsdown.

Located near the Temasek Club, Cicada offers al fresco dining under the stars. Besides serving casual French Californian bistro fare, this restaurant owns an extensive collection of wine. Cicada’s mottos are to serve up good food and provide a space for art-related events, like exhibitions and sculpture shows. So if you are into the arts, this is one art-centric makan place that has got to be on your list!

My First Valentine’s Day With Babe

leave a comment »

Having been single for quite some time, I kinda forgot what it is like to celebrate Valentine’s Day. After all, a singleton’s definition of Valentine’s Day = just like any other days. This probably explained why I became a little excited and decided to give some thoughts as to what presents I should get for my babe.

After a serious brain-storming session, I decided to get him a tie since he did mention to me that he does not own one. Furthermore, I believe that a tie will come in handy once he enters the workforce (Babe managed to secure a job position with MFA). However, the list does not end at there. I decided to observe the tradition of giving a hand-made gift and hence spent a really long time putting a hand bouquet, consisting of 21 Ferrero Roche flowers, together. My friends asked me, “Why 21?” Well that’s due to the fact that 21 flowers stand for “I am devoted to you”(ok shoot me for encouraging commercialization on this day).

On the other side of the island, my baby boy was seriously racking his brain to find the perfect presents. Determine to make this a very special Valentine’s Day, he combed the island to get me 10 lovely beautiful blue roses and a sweet white camisole from Cotton On Body.

To others, these presents may seem ordinary. However, no matter how cliché this may sound, it is truly the thought that matters. Some may asked, “How do you know for sure?” Well I know as I was there with him.

It kinda went like this: My silly baby boy was frustrated that he was not able to find the perfect gift for me (even though I pointed out many various stuff to him). Eventually, the angel in me decided to give him some personal space. I told him that we should tour Far East Plaza separately and perhaps by then, he will be able to find something suitable. We agreed to meet after half an hour. Upon separation, the baby boy ran as fast as he could to Wisma Atria to get the white camisole that I pointed out to him earlier. He then went  to Art Friend to look for a gift box. However, by then, I was suspicious (well I admitted that I walked through the entire Far East Plaza in search of him, at lighting speed, mind you) and I texted him to check on his whereabouts. This made my baby boy nervous and he ran back to Far East Plaza via the long route to the carpark (for fear that I will be guarding the entrance; how paranoid) to keep the present.

Tsk tsk and to think that I fell for that sad puppy look he gave me when he complained about not being able to find something suitable. Moreover, with some assistance from his mom, he managed to customize and wrap a hand bouquet.

Reverting back to the day’s event, baby boy made reservation at Werner’s Oven located at Upper East Coast Road. If the name of this authentic German restaurant and bakery rang a bell, it is probably because the family-run establishment has been in business since 1988!
