Jalan Alor; Kuala Lumpur’s Most Exciting Street

with 2 comments

If you are in Kuala Lumpur and are extremely pressed for time, food enthusiasts from Malaysians will gladly recommend you to Jalan Alor. This is not surprising since this former red light district is now home to endless stretch of food stalls and has been featured on many blogs and television programmes.

Walking along Jalan Alor can be relatively overwhelming for many tourists. Besides having to watch out for oncoming traffic, one has to master the art of being decisive when faced with staffs that are extremely persuasive (at times, to the point of being pushy). To make matter worse, most of the food stalls specialize in the same area; seafood! Picking a place to eat amidst the presence of such fierce competition is very much a gamble. Still, it is a decision that we had to make. Simultaneously, we decided on Restoran Meng Kee Grill Fish.

From the stall’s name, we knew we had to order the grilled fish. There were a few selections to choose from and we settled for stingray. The stingray served was cooked differently from the ones served back home as it was not covered with sambal chili paste.

Meng Kee's grilled fish

Initially, I expected the meat to taste relatively dried as the skin appeared to be a bit too charred. Surprisingly, the grilled stingray tasted very fresh and moist. Unlike those stingrays served in Singapore, one could easily taste the succulent flavor of Meng Kee’s grilled stingray (due to the absence of the over-powering sambal chili paste). However if you prefer to have your grilled stingray cooked Singapore’s style, simply request for a plate of freshly fried sambal chili paste. The chief would gladly oblige and not charge you a single cent more for it!

Another dish which was very good was the sambal chili la la. The fragrant smell of onions, curry leaves and sambal was so enticing to the senses that it made this dish to die for.

Sambal chili la la

Taste wise, it did not disappoint. The la la were nicely cooked and tasted very fresh. The sambal chili paste gave this dish the ultimate shiok factor as the former was not thickened but rather fried to perfection. The robust flavor of this dish left all of us wanting more. In fact, this is the best rendition of sambal chili la la that I have ever tasted!

To complete our gastronomical desire for seafood, we had to order oyster omelette.

Oyster omelette

The oyster omelette served here were not as fluffy and had lesser sticky gooey bits as compared to the ones served back home. On the whole, the oyster omelette was not spectacularly outstanding but I did adore the thin and crispy bits of the omelette (sadly I did not manage to take a clear shot of the oyster omelette). They did not taste as oily as the ends of the oyster omelette served in Singapore and had an addictive crunch to them.

Even though quick decisions are usually unsafe decisions, our decision to visit Restoran Meng Kee Grill Fish did not turn out to be that bad. So to all food enthusiasts who happened to be around Jalan Alor, do give this place a try. I am certain you won’t be disappointed :)
